01/31/2003 Archived Entry: "Trout Thursday was a blast!"
Well, with a few hours notice from Dieter, I organized a small Trout Thursday celebration here in Toronto.
Never heard of Trout Thursday before? Neither had I. Here's a definition from trouthursday.com
Defined as the Thursday before Groundhog's Day, Trout Thursday is a completely open holiday. There's no religious origins, there's no official ceremony, there's no preconceived notion of what you're supposed to do, feel, be, or say. The only rule is, you have to eat trout. After that, it's up to you.
We had three celebrants: me, my husband Dave and Stephanie Troeth (an unexpected but very welcome guest from Australia by way of Montreal). I forgot to take wonderful photos of the food (as Erik Mattheis did). Despite Dave's "isn't this another one of your geeky internet things" protestations, a good time was had by all.
We had green beans, salad and trout. Not too exciting. But the trout was excellent. It was prepared using a modified version of a Jamie Oliver recipe from his Naked Chef book. It was trout fillets stuffed with lemons and fresh thyme and baked en papillote. Mmmm... tasty.
Next year, when I finally have a proper kitchen and dining room (and a bit more notice), I'll have all my friends over to celebrate properly. You're all on notice for Trout Thursday 2004!

It was delicious trout! Food doesn't have to be exotic to be good :) Thanks for the dinner Tara - 'twas great!
