06/24/2003 Archived Entry: "Sittin' watchin' the world go by..."

-------- This was actually written last Friday... haven't had time to put it up... too busy... help! ---
So I'm sitting here on a lovely pre-summer day on the patio of a Starbucks across from CityTV. The world is walking by. But I still don't have wireless. Maybe I could actually be posting this instead of just typing it up in SimpleText for later.

I've tried to get wireless... I've had lots of people advise me on the ins and outs. I've looked up AirPort Extreme (no I can't use it on my computer). A very smart man sent me a link with the differences between the various wireless standards (yes a string of letters and numbers that doesn't really tell us much). Why doesn't one of those geeky marketing types come up with a better name than 802.11b or whatever it is? How are we supposed to remember which is faster b, g, or x version of wireless?

I went to CPUsed yesterday to ask about getting an airport card. I was ready to smack down the cash and even pay the money to have it installed. Apparently, my laptop is the model that Apple didn't plan out very well and the Airport card has to be installed in the middle of the machine - after unscrewing and taking parts out and then trying to put it all back together after the card is in. Yes, I have enough headaches of my own. I'll pay for installation. Thank you!

But they had no airport cards left. The guy who was there - full of information even if they didn't have any stock - said that I'd get better range with a wireless card that fits into my PCI slot (okay I'm clueless - I didn't even know where my PCI slot was) and hangs a little antenna out. This one I wouldn't have to pay for installation - I'd get better range - and it's about the same price. But of course, they didn't have any. Oh well. Maybe another day.

That'll be the day I buy the new spanking version of OSX and actually start using it. The day that I get the Adobe Design Collection . The day of my dreams...
